]]> Channapatna is famous for its handmade lacquer wooden toys, hence known as ‘Toy City.’ These products have been developed by contemporizing the Channapatna toys.

The Channapatna toys and artisan is a two-century-old industry, introduced by Tipu Sultan in the eighteenth century. He invited Persian arts men to teach this unique art form to the locals. Ivory wood, known as Aale Mara, was first used in making these toys for nearly a century. Eventually, they started using teak, rosewood, sandalwood, rubber and other forms of wood. The Channapatna artisans use the best wood piece that is then sun-dried to reduce moisture and increase durability. The wood is later cut, carved and shaped into the desired figures/sculptures – smoothened out using sandpaper.
