Tholu, meaning leather in Telugu and Bommalu meaning dolls, is an art form that is believed to have originated in 200 BC during the rule of the Satavahana dynasty. Leather puppets are ingrained in the culture of Andhra Pradesh. The puppets are painted in striking natural colours, often made by the makers themselves. The colour scheme, style and decorative elements are heavily influenced by the aesthetics of the 16th-century. Culturally, Tholu Bommalata was used to put on puppet shows for story-telling and entertainment purposes. However, now these are made mainly for décor purposes.
