Craft History
The Channapatna toy and craft industry is over two centuries old, introduced by Tipu Sultan in the 18th century. Persian artisans were invited to teach this unique art form to locals. Initially, ivory wood (Aale Mara) was used, followed by teak, rosewood, sandalwood, rubber, and other types of wood.
The artisans carefully select the best wood, which is then sun-dried to reduce moisture and enhance durability. The wood is cut, carved, shaped, and smoothened with sandpaper. Each piece is lacquered for a polished finish and painted using natural dyes such as kumkum powder for red, turmeric for yellow, and other vegetable dyes.
Using natural dyes makes this product eco-friendly, non-toxic, and safe, while maintaining vibrant colors. This is what makes Channapatna crafts stand out worldwide.
