Pattachitra means ‘Patta – painting’. The patta is prepared with cloth being soaked in tamarind pulp and then painted using natural colours and brush made of plant roots.
From the heart of Odisha, the Pattachitra style of painting is a highly disciplined form of art. Pattachitra means ‘canvas painting’ in Sanskrit. It is known for the application of rich colours and the portrayal of simple mythological themes. The process of creating a painting requires undeterred patience and impeccable craftsmanship. The ’patta’ is made of soaked tamarind seeds that are heated in an earthen pot to prepare a paste called ‘niryas kalpa’. The chitrakar then holds two pieces of cloth with it and polish it once it’s firm enough. The colour is naturally sourced and the gum of the kaitha tree is used as a base. Plant roots are often used to make brushes. The rich colourful motifs adorning these paintings will add an enchanting beauty to your home.
